Lawn Tennis - This is the original name used to describe modern tennis, based primarily on the fact that it is played on the grass, which was intended to distinguish it from tennis played on a court.
Left Court - Left court and advantage court are the same thing.
Let - This is a stroke that does not count, and therefore must be played again. This most commonly occurs when a serve is able to touch the net before it enters into the proper service court. If the serve happens to be delivered before the receiving player is ready, if the play happens to be interrupted or if stoppage of play is reversed by an umpire, a let may also occur.
Line Judge - This is an official that is responsible for making the determination of whether or not a particular shot landed in or out of the court. Line judges include baseline judges, sideline judges and service line judges.
Lob - This is a shot that is hit up into a high arc, typically over the head of the opponent. Examples of lobs include the defensive lob and the offensive lob.
Long - This describes a shot that is characterized as being out because it landed in the court beyond the baseline on the opponent's side.
Love - This means zero, or no points. This is possibly derived from the French l'ove, the word for egg, because a zero is the shape of an egg.
Love Game - This is a game in which the game's loser did not score any points.
Love Set - This is a set in which the game's loser did not win any games.
Match - This is a tennis contest that is comprised of sets, where each set is comprised of several games. In a major competition, a men's match would be made up of five different sets, and the winner will be the player winning three sets first. Women typically play in a best of three set of matches instead, however.
Match Point - This is a point that is going to end the match if the leading player or leading side wins it.
Mid Court - This is the area of the court that is in the vicinity of the court's service line.
Mini Break - This is the loss of a point during a tie breaker while serving.
Mixed Doubles - This is a double's competition where each team is composed of a single female and a single male player.
Net - This is the barrier dividing a tennis court into two different lengthwise halves. It is a webbing that is normally made out of a synthetic material and suspended from a single steel cable between two metal poles that are located within 3 feet of the sidelines on each side of the court.
