In what is perhaps a shocking move to some, and not shocking at all to others, Roger Federer has announced that he is pulling out of the Japan Open and the Shanghai Masters.
Roger Federer recently withdrew himself from both the Japan Open as well as the Shanghai ATP Masters on Friday, having cited that he simply needs to get some rest following a year that has been physically challenging for him.
The JTA or Japan Tennis Association has recently said that the top ranked Roger Federer was withdrawing himself from the October 5 through 11 Japan Open as well as the Shanghai tournament which is slated to be held during the following week.
After some consultation with his team and his physicians, Federer has decided that he needs to make this difficult decision and withdraw himself from both of the tournaments, according to a statement that he provided. He says that what this is going to do is allow him to give his body some time to rest, to rehabilitate and the recover from a year that has been physically challenging for him.
Roger Federer managed to reach the final stage of all four of the Grand Slam tournaments this year, and he managed to win the French Open tournament for the very first time in the history of his career. He also managed to break the record that Pete Sampras held after winning a 15th major title while playing in Wimbledon this year.
Roger Federer also managed to earn two points for the Switzerland team during last weekend when he took a 3 to 2 victory over Italy during the playoffs, allowing him to remain in the top-tier of the World Group for the Davis Cup.
This is actually the second time that Roger Federer has pulled out of this particular tournament right before it is slated to begin. When he withdrew from the 2007 version of the Japan Open, the reason that he cited was fatigue.
Roger Federer has said that he is disappointed to be withdrawing from the Tokyo and Shanghai tournaments. He says that these are two of his favorite cities in the world. He also cited that the fans have been absolutely great to him over the years.
Two players that are slated to be participating in the Japan Open this year are the US Open champion winner, Joan Martin del Potro, as well as the third ranked player Andy Murray.
It will certainly be sad not to see Roger Federer playing during these tournaments, but with Andy Murray, Juan Martin del Potro and a number of other top seeded players vowing to participate in the Japan Open, there is likely to be plenty of action still.
