Final preparations are currently being made for the West Virginia Open, the 48th of its kind, which is slated to begin on July 22 and last until July 26, and will be held at the Oglebay Tennis Center. This event is building a great amount of following, especially when you consider the prestigious facilities where it is slated to be held, which is allowing registration numbers to grow by leaps and bounds.
Hundreds of the top tennis players from the middle states section of the United States Tennis Association will be converging here on the Har-Tru courts of Oglebay for this special event, which has been designated for three years now as the Middle States Sectional championship. The Middle States section is comprised of portions of New Jersey as well as Delaware, West Virginia's Northern Panhandle and Pennsylvania.
The points on this particular tournament stop are double the weight that come from any other tournament. Last year there were 125 entrants, and that number is expected to grow by leaps and bounds this year. The director of the tournament is Mark Panepinto, and this is his second year in place as the director. He has been promoting NTRP or National Tennis Rating Program categories, which begin at 1.0 and climb as high as 7.0, and doing this has opened the draw up to more local players than before. Another alluring attraction for this tournament has been the chosen facilities.
Oglebay is a venue that plays host to a variety of different tournaments including both annual Junior Opens and Senior Opens as well. This particular venue is gaining popularity as an outstanding place to hold tennis tournaments, and for good reason. There is also talk about the USTA Futures eventually coming to Oglebay as well which will give the facilities even more prestige.
