Tennis Racquet Materials
November 19th, 2009 | Racket, Tennis
Most of the tennis racquets of today are made using a carbon fiber composite material. These unique carbon fiber composite materials have an excellent strength to weight ratio, and what this does is allows for developing the very popular oversized racquets and oversized racquet heads. Some of these tennis racquets are filled with a polyurethane foam material that allows for vibration to be reduced. There are other types of tennis racquets that are specifically left hollow so that weight can be decreased.
There is a whole variety of different racquet materials that are available to you when you go shopping at the local tennis pro shop or sporting goods store. It may take you some time and some knowledge to really sort through all of these offerings simply because there are so many choices available for your consideration. Here is a glimpse at some of the tennis racquet materials that you can choose from.
Graphite - The largest majority of all tennis racquets that are being manufactured today involve graphite in some form or another as one of the base ingredients. Graphite is the equivalent of the old school laminated wood racquet from days old, at least as far as the modern day technological generation is concerned. This graphite material is quite remarkably strong while being light weight, meaning that it can provide a terrific amount of power coupled with good control and excellent feel. It is best as a composite mixture with other types of material if you want to get the most out of what it has to offer. Graphite composite racquets are ideal for beginners as well as players that are more advanced.
Boron and Kevlar - Both of these materials are fibers that resemble graphite, but they are lighter and even tend to be stiffer in comparison to the graphite material. Kevlar is known for being used in bullet proof materials. Unless it is mixed in with other materials, it can create a lot of shock as well as vibration through its stiffness, so you should aim for a Kevlar and boron composite.
Aluminum - This material is used in most of the less expensive types of racquets. It offers feel and power, but it is not the highest quality material so it is used in low grade and mid grade racquets rather than the really high quality ones.
Titanium - This is a relatively new technology in the world of tennis racquets. It is extremely light, strong and easy to work with and so it has been a hit among players from all walks of life and levels of experience and expertise. Titanium tennis racquets are quite similar to aluminum ones but intended for higher end use.
