As we touched on in the previous blog on tennis racquet strings, the quality of the string that you use for your racquet matters and so choosing the right string is vitally important. We talked about reading the string gauge and what strings can be made out of, and now we are going to continue on and take a look at the construction of strings and the role that this plays in choosing the proper racquet strings for your game.
Construction of Strings
A tennis stringing guide is also capable of classifying strings based on how they are constructed, and here your options are mono, ribbon, CW, CWW and multifilament. Choosing the right construction of your tennis racquet strings will help you choose the right strings for your playing style and the type of game you are attempting to play.
Mono: Mono construction means that the strings have a surface coating to improve durability. These strings are made out of single and solid fibers.
Ribbon: What ribbon construction means is that these fibers are similar to natural gut but they use ribbons instead.
Multifilament: Multifilament construction means that the tennis racquet strings use several different string materials and these string materials are impregnated with polyurethane for durability and quality.
CW: CW construction of tennis racquet strings means that there is a solid core that is made of thin filaments, and CW construction is commonly used in tournament play.
CWW: CWW construction means that there is a solid core but that there are two layers of filaments rather than a single layer such as in CW construction.
Durability and Playability of Strings
Packages of tennis string material typically come with ratings relating both to durability and to playability. You should be making sure to look out for these particular details, and when you are buying tennis racquet string you should make sure that you are choosing a balance that is suitable between playability and durability so that you can get the most out of your strings.
If you choose a string that is durable enough for you but not playable enough, or playable enough without being durable enough, then you are wasting time and money because you will not get the most out of the string. If you're not getting the most out of the tennis racquet string that you buy, then you are going to hamper your game. The purpose of choosing a tennis racquet stringing material and gauge is to choose what is going to best benefit you. The reason why there are so many options out there is because there is not a single one size fits all solution to stringing your racquet. Don't be afraid to try out different types of strings, gauges and tensions, just make sure that you do not settle until you are satisfied with what you have.
