Tennis Scoring

tennisA game of tennis starts with the service and ends when a player has scored 4 points, as long as they are also 2 points ahead of their opponent. Games are generally part of a set, which is a series of games played until one player has reached six wins, again, a lead of two is required for a win in a set. Sets can then be part of a match which consists of an odd number of sets, so as to prevent a tie.

Game - In a game of tennis, one player will be serving for the whole game, and so the serving player's score will be the first one announced for that game. From the archaic predecessors of the game tennis has held over its scoring system which may seem odd to the newcomer to the sport.

  • When a player has yet to gain a point, their score is referred to as love.
  • When a player has gained their first point, their score is 15.
  • When a player has gained their second point, their score is 30.
  • When a player has gained their third point, their score is 40.
  • When a player has gained their second point, that is considered the Game point.
  • However, if the score is 40-40 the game is referred to as Deuce, and to win either player must win two consecutive points, if they score one and lose the next, the game returns to deuce.

Depending on the lead a player has at 40, their position can be announced in three ways:

  • Game point - The opponent's score is 30
  • Double Game Point - The opponent's score is 15
  • Triple Game Point - The opponent's score is 0

As well, the point that a player will make after 40 is referred to as a break point.

  • Break point - The opponent's score is 30
  • Double Break Point - The opponent's score is 15
  • Triple Break Point - The opponent's score is 0

Set - A won game is a single point in a set, in most cases a set will run until a player has won six games with the needed two game lead. Unless a tie-breaker or alternative scoring method is agreed upon ahead of time, this can go on for a long time.

Depending on the number of games played so far in the set the players may have to rotate which side of the court that they are on. If the number of games played so far is even, the players remain in their current position. If the number of games played is odd, the players will rotate which side of the court that they are on.

Match - Unlike the scoring used in games and sets, there is not required lead needed to win a match. Matches will consist of an odd number of sets so that a tie is not an option. Generally in amateur and friendly matches, the winner will need to get the best of three sets. Most professionally matches will require best out of five to win.

The scoring methods may seem complex at first, but are simple once you become familiarized with them. And the game of tennis is well worth the little effort needed to be able to enjoy watching or playing this exciting sport.
