The ATP World Tour Finals

Roger FedererThe ATP World Tour Finals in London set 2 tennis records, with 17,467 in the audience, making it the largest crowd to ever watch a match in Britain--2,500 more than can watch a match at Wimbledon's Centre Court.  This also ranks as the biggest indoor tennis tournament in tennis history, with 260,000 ticket sales for the finale.

Top-seed Roger Federer defeated Fernando Verdasco last Sunday in the ATP World Tour Finals. The finals are for the top 8 players in the world and are being held at the O2 Arena in London. Federer lost once during the group A match, during the opening game. But even though he is top-ranked, it didn't become clear that he was going to show as a controlling player until the second set when he evened the score by converting his first break point.

It had appeared he might lose his third match in a row, even then. Verdasco was serving well and focusing his shots, even though he managed to score only two break points. But Federer's play improved after the break point conversion in the second set, and his third match play had him living up to expectations once again.

In the second set's 12th game, they were 15-15 with Verdasco's turn to serve, and he faltered with a poor overhead shots and a long shot. Federer then hit one at the net to take the lead. By the end, Verdasco had 31 forced errors to Federer's 29, and only 18 winners to Federer's 30.

Things are looking up for Federer, who came to the tournament after two straight losses. He played one match at the Paris Masters and lost to Julien Benneateau. Earlier this month he was knocked out of the Swiss Indoors final by Novak Djokovic, a Group B player in this tournament.  Federer plays again on Tuesday, against Andy Murray who defeated Juan Martin del Potro after a slump to final at 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Verdasco will play del Potro on Tuesday, as well.

Murray and del Potro are familiar with each other's styles from meeting up at the U.S. Open, and both had dramatic wins in their matches, but their play was riddled with errors. Murray's only match point came from a del Potro double-fault. Del Potro had a bloody nose in the first set and had to take time, but recovered and had no further problems.

Murray controlled the third set and went on to a clear victory over del Potro. He said that the Argentinean was hitting big with long, huge shots and serves. But Murray said that tactics were his strong point, and that he knew he needed to find a way through del Potro's huge shots. And in the end, he found his way through them to win.

Group B players include Rafael Nadal, Robin Soderling, Nikolay Davydenko and Novak Djokovic, Federer's winning rival at the Swiss Indoor finals. On Monday, Nadal and Soderling will meet up in the day's first singles match, followed by play between Davydenko and Djokovic.
