The number two world player, Roger Federer, beat Tommy Haas and got into the quarter finals in the French Open last week. This Swiss player was aiming right for the only grand slam win that he has not reached in his career.
Serena Williams beat Aleksandra Wozniak to further her streak to eighteen matches with this win. Next for Williams is Svetlana Kuznetsova who beat Agnieszka Radwanska to put her at number seven.
The French Open saw four wins for Maria Sharapova despite her injured shoulder. She reached the quarterfinals in the French Open when she beat Li Na. Winning the French Open for Sharapova means a Grand Slam career win.
In the women's doubles tournament, the Williams sisters lose to Bethanie Mattek- Sands and Nadia Petrova.
Ana Ivanovic was eliminated in the fourth round in the French Open as she was beaten by Victoria Azarenka. The defending champion had a trainer come and look at her neck during the game as she became increasingly dizzy during the final game in the first set. No one knows what caused the problem Ivanovic was suffering from and what caused the upsetting loss.
Saturday saw some drama from Serena Williams as she accused her opponent of cheating when she insists that the ball went off of Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez's arm and not her racket. She also succumbed to a coughing fit in the middle of the game. There are many experts who believe the cheat claim should be investigated. The claims of cheating in tennis are so rare that it is worthy of investigation. The honorable sport is well known for players confessing of balls bouncing twice on their side of the net and generally agreeing to calls that don't come down in their favor. Many people clearly saw the ball strike the wrist of Sanchez and the rules clearly state that any ball that hits a player's body is a lost point.
Quarterfinalist in the French Open, Fernando Gonzales, had an interesting injury that occurred far from the court. He apparently sprained his ankle signing autographs. The player took some time off to heal from his unusual injury so he could be fresh for play in the French Open. The time off apparently was well used because Gonzales beat Victor Hanescu and landed in the quarterfinals.
Briton Andy Murray has made it to the French Open quarterfinals for his first time. Beating Marin Cilic gave him is first winning streak of four matches for his career.
Rafael Nadal will not be facing Federer in the French Open after his stunning loss to Robin Soderling. This is one of the biggest stories in the French Open as the upset comes from an unlikely opponent. Naturally, Nadal is very disappointed with his performance. Currently Nadal is ranked number one in the ATP rankings with Federer in the number two spot.
The WTA rankings place Dinara Safina in number one with Serena Williams taking up the number two spot for this week.
