The MercedesCup, SkiStar Swedish Open, XXIII Internazionali Femminili Di Palermo SNAI Open, and the ECM Prague Open

This week is tennis featured four different tournaments, two each for the men and women. The men competed in The MercedesCup (clay court) and the SkiStar Swedish Open (clay court). The women found themselves at the XXIII Internazionali Femminili Di Palermo SNAI Open and the ECM Prague Open, both on clay courts.

The SkiStar Swedish open featured plenty of big names, including Robin Soderling, Fernando Verdasco, David Ferrer, Tommy Robredo, and Nicolas Almagro. All of the tops seeds managed to advance through into the quarterfinals, save for Verdasco: he was ousted by Tommy Robredo, the 5 seed. Soderling and Almagro met in the finals, with Almagro coming out on top with a 7-5, 3-6, 62 victory.

The MercedesCup also featured a fairly packed crowd, including Jurgen Melzer, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Giles Simon, Nikolay Davydenko, and Gael Monfils. The winner of the tournament received, in addition to prize money, a white Mercedes-Benz E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY convertible. There were few upsets in the tournament, save for Davydenko losing the second round to D. Gimeno-Traver, and Giles Simon losing to S. Greul in the same round in straight sets. The final matched up Gael Monfils with Albert Montanes, the 5th seed. Montanes walked away with the tournament and the car, as Monfils retired in the second set, 6-2, 1-2. Monfils tweaked his right ankle and was unable to finish the match.

On the Women’s Side, the Palermo SNAI Open featured a few recognizable names, including Flavia Pennetta and Aravane Rezai. Rezai lost in the third round to Oprandi, while Pennetta managed to make her way to the finals. Pennetta found herself up against Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi. Kanepi actually managed to take out the defending champion, marking the first win for Estonia on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.

The women’s ECM Prague Open featured some up-and-comers who are looking to make a name for themselves on the tour. The final featured Agnes Szavay, the 7th seed from Hungary, and Barbra Zahlavova Strycova from the Czech Republic. Szavay managed to take the final, winning the tournament in three sets (6-2, 1-6, 6-2).

In some non-tournament related Tennis news, women’s tennis star Serena Williams will undergo surgery and miss the three tournaments leading up to the U.S. Open. Serena cut open her right foot on some broken glass at a restaurant. She will not be able to attend the tournaments in Montreal, Istanbul, and Cincinnati. The U.S. Open starts on August 30th, giving her the time that she needs to recover.
