Serve -
This is the first in a series on improving your serve through different tennis playing tips. Top ranking players tend to exhibit far fewer variations in terms of their style and their form in their serves than any other type of stroke in the game of tennis. Most of the better tennis players are going to use a combination between sidespin and topspin in order to achieve what they perceive to be their most basic serve. They are going to vary their spin and their speed during each serve, depending on whether they are making a first serve or a second serve, but they can use spin serves as their basic serve any time that they like.
1 - You should be imitating these top players by turning the spin serve into your basic serve as well. Flat serves, extreme slice serves and twist serves are all nice when it comes to advanced serves, meaning that it is nice for you to have them in your arsenal, but they are not absolutely going to be necessary for achieving serving success. You should experiment with these serves during your tennis career, but only once you have developed a spin serve that is both reliable and safe.
2 - As you take your position up to serve, you should be pretending that you are getting ready to throw a ball directly over the net rather than to serve it. You should be standing in the same manner that a thrower would. You should be standing so that a line can be drawn from your rear foot's toes past your front foot's toes in the direction of your target, and so that your feet are spread with enough width between them that you will be able to pass your racquet face between your knees edgewise.
You should be pointing your front foot in the direction of the net post on the right, and you should be placing your rear foot in a parallel manner to the baseline. This particular stance, a thrower's stance, is going to give you a wide and steady base. This is a base that you will be much more likely to make a good serve from than if you were standing in a less stable position with your feet more closely together.
3 - When serving, you should be using a finger grip. In order to serve hard, you are going to need a lot of wrist action and hand action. For this reason, if you are serving hard you should be using a backhand grip or something similar to a backhand grip. With the palm of your striking hand almost at the racquet handle's top plane, you can whip the racquet head up and right over at the ball using a great amount of speed.
