Tips for Teaching Tennis

The bottom line when it comes to coaching or teaching tennis is that if you have a strong beginner's tennis coaching program, then you will be able to develop a long term, sustainable training operation. Putting together a tennis coaching program for younger players that is both exciting and challenging should be a top priority for any serious coach that hopes to teach younger players how to master the game. Young beginner players require special coaching methods and assistance in order to teach them to stay in the game and love tennis.

Tip 1 - Success on the court leads to confidence, which is what leads to fun.

Tennis is a recreational sport, and the best way to produce elite level player is to attract young athletes in and to allow them to flourish so that they can grow into the sport. If you are constantly and consistently positive and you play fun and enjoyable games, then all of your players will succeed and will enjoy the atmosphere of enjoyment that your players and their parents can enjoy. You want to hook them on tennis now so that they can enjoy the sport for life.

Tip 2 - Use tennis equipment that is modified specifically to cater to younger players.

By using lower nets, softer balls, lighter and better balanced racquets and fun equipment, it becomes easier to get children interested and to keep them excited in the game.

Tip 3 - Utilize cones as a way to keep the players in position.

If you use cones or spots to position them for games and activities, then they will have a reference point to work with, which will keep them from losing position or focus.

Tip 4 - Refer to the names of areas and lines in the court.

Use the proper names of lines and different parts of the court when you give directions to your players, educating them fully while you teach them how to enjoy the game. This will help them when they begin playing matches for real later on.

Tip 5 - Always demonstrate the drill before you explain it.

Young children tend to be fantastic learners, but they learn best through copying what they observe and experimenting to feel out how something works. Give your players tons of visual coaching and have them shadow you until they can feel for the correct motions. This is a far more effective way to explain and teach than simply to explain things in words and expect a solid response from your kids.

Tip 6- Avoid getting too technical in how you explain things.

On younger players, technical instruction is usually wasted. Use simple explanations like higher or lower, harder or softer, to the right or to the left, and use visual cues whenever possible for the best results.

Tip 7 - Progress the program by giving your students a reason to keep coming back.

You should progress from a mini court to the full court, smaller racquets to full sized racquets, low compression balls to tournament balls, 30 minute lessons to hour long lessons and so on and so forth. If you keep challenging your students, they will continue to come back.
