Tips to Improve Your Serve

There are a number of tips that you can employ in order to improve your tennis game. This week we are talking about the steps that you can take in order to improve upon your serve. Serving is a vital aspect of all tennis games, and so being a capable server is a great way to ensure success when playing matches casually or professionally.

1 - Throw as an outfielder while serving.

You can add a significant amount of power to your serve when you use a throwing motion while hitting the ball. You can swing your hitting arm down and then away from the net before swinging it back and then up in the direction of the top of the rear fence. You should be keeping your palm down almost to the point where it is facing the ground and then keep your elbow up so that it is away from your body while you are swinging your arm back and then up. At this point your elbow should be approximately shoulder high. Your shoulders should be tilting, however, during the point where you toss and then backswing. Your tossing shoulder needs to rise up as you toss, and then your hitting shoulder needs to drop down a bit. Now your elbow should be as high as the hitting shoulder and the upper part of the arm should be parallel with the ground.

Now that your elbow is up and away from your body and now that your palm is facing down, you are going to be in a good position to essentially throw the head of the racquet at the ball, really adding significant power to your serve as a result. The throwing motion should be similar to the one that an outfielder would use in baseball, making like you are throwing the ball to home base from the outfield. This should be an upward throw, in other words, rather than a downward throw or a parallel to the ground throw such as the one that a pitcher might use.

2 - Toss as if from a tripod.

If you are looking to serve consistently, then accurate tossing is vital. Stop tossing from different places so you can use the same swing every time. Serve by holding two balls in a tossing hand, placing one in the tripod that is formed by your first two fingers and your thumb, letting it rest in your hand comfortably. The second ball should be placed in the palm of your hand below the first, using the last two fingers to hold it in place. Toss the first ball by launching it up from this tripod simply by opening the fingers during the upward motion that your tossing arm takes. After a fault, toss the second ball by moving it up to the tripod and launching it just like you did with the first.
