At the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Andy Roddick defeated Fernando Gonzales on Sunday to secure his spot in the Australian Open quarter-finals. They battled for over three-and-a-half hours until Gonzalez double-faulted around 1 a.m. The match saw Roddick struggling at times, and again clashing with a chair umpire. This is the second time during the Open that Roddick has exchanged words with an umpire, with the first time ending in Roddick snubbing the umpire's outstretched hand at the end of the match.
Roddick claimed he didn't realize the man went to shake his hand, and somehow missed it. He also has said that he doesn't understand many of the rules of play at the Open, and these rules seem to be causing problems with other players, too. At one point, a ball that was called 'out' by a linesman was challenged by Roddick. He won the challenge, which mean that the match advanced to another set. Gonzales argued that since the ball had been called out he'd withdrawn and not tried to hit it, so that ball should be replayed rather than it being counted against him.
The ball remained counted in Roddick's favor, angering Gonzalez who smashed his racket on the ground after he dropped his first service game of the next match. He did say that while that point was important, it wasn't what decided the match.
Nikolay Davydenko defeated Fernando Verdasco in 5 sets to win his 13th straight match and advance to the quarter-finals. Davydenko has defeated the two top seeded players in the sport, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, in other tournaments, but he's never managed to reach the final of a major tournament. Novak Djokovic, the champion in 2008 and #3 after Federer and Nadal, has also advanced.
Roger Federer advanced to the quarter-finals by defeating longtime rival Lleyton Hewitt in just over 2 hours. His appearance in the quarter-finals is no surprise to tennis fans, as he's made the semifinals or better every time and is ranked #1 in the world.
In the women's singles, it's also no surprise that #1 Serena Williams defeated Samantha Stosur in just over an hour to advance to the quarter-finals. Former #1 Justine Henin has also made the quarter-finals in her comeback bid and will play Nadia Petrova, ranked #19, on Tuesday. Number 2 player Dinara Safina left during the opening of a 4th-round match with Maria Kirilenko because of a back or leg injury. She was trailing in the match 4 to 5 when she limped off-court for a moment and then returned to shake Kirilenko's hand, giving her the victory.
Kirilenko will face China's Zheng Jie, the first Chinese player to reach the quarter-finals at the Open. Li Na, in an upset win over 4th seed Caroline Wozniacki, will also advance to the quarterfinals. This is the first time 2 players from China have made it to the last 8 of the same grand slam. Li will face 6th seed Venus Williams, sister of #1 Serena, in the quarter-finals.
