Two Basic Types of Strokes

tennisWithout first learning the movements and developing all of your skills in order to achieve success in tennis, it is going to be vitally important for you consider taking lessons so that you can learn all of the basics that are naturally associated with playing tennis as a beginner. No matter how talented you think that you may be, the only way that you are going to be able to build up techniques for tennis while staying in shape is going to be to practice consistently as well as to learn new things constantly. For example, there are two basic types of strokes that people use when they are just getting started in the game of tennis:

1 - The Groundstroke

  • The player or the student who is learning tennis needs to realize that it is vitally important that the groundstroke be mastered. A groundstroke is going to begin with a slight and short backswing.
  • It may be possible for you to also use a shortened type of grip on your racquet handle.
  • You should be maintaining the standard type or method of follow through.
  • You should be lengthening your backswing slowly, or at a slow pace.
  • You should be sliding the grip in the direction of the handle.
  • It is important that you remember when it comes to basic beginner's tennis that you are going to drop feed first. Second, you should know that doing a short drop feed is completely okay. Finally, you need to know that upon following through with your drop feed you are going to want to feed out from your tennis racquet.
  • You are going to want to start out from inside of the service line, and then you may move back at a rising pace. You should begin slowly, and you should typically try to end up with a run.

2 - The Overhead Stroke

  • The racquet needs to begin at the point of contact and then slowly you will be able to present a bigger swing.
  • You should be standing close to the net. You should begin to move backwards, but you should be taking your time.
  • You should begin with a soft feed right into the racquet. Try a few high feeds but do not overwhelm yourself too quickly or you will not learn.
  • All of your practice sessions should be brief as well as productive. When you are just getting started you will be itching to play and your attention span will be short. Make sure that you are working on your techniques in a precise way in order to get your form right and have the best possible results.
