In the first round of the long-anticipated Davis Cup tournament, the US is already out of the running marking the first US first round elimination since 2005. The American team was going after their 33rd Davis Cup victory, but Serbian Novak Djokovic didn't allow it to happen. With the defeat of John Isner on Sunday, Djokovic gave Serbia a 3-1 lead and knocked the United States out of the tournament.
Despite Isner's 24 aces, Djokovic won the match 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-4 and sent Serbia ahead into the World Group for the first time ever. Djokovic said that Isner "fought like crazy" with some amazing serves. Isner is a tall 6'9 with a noted powerful serve. In the 2nd set, Djokovic broke a racket returning one of them. During a tie breaker in the 4th set, Djokovic was also handed down a penalty for a ball violation. It wasn't an easy defeat for him, as he failed to convert 3 match points in the 5th set and only managed to convert the 6th when Isner hit the ball into the net.
But despite Isner's serves and the struggle against a player who was playing so well and serving so powerfully, Djokovic, who currently ranks at number 2 in the world, pulled it out. This was Isner's first appearance at the Davis Cup. He's ranked 20 in the world. He gave Djokovic credit where he thought it was due, saying that he knew he had to play his best against him to have a chance at winning and that he returns serves well. He admitted that two break points where he double-faulted were probably his downfall, but he was proud of his game. It took Djokovic over 4 hours to defeat him.
Missing from the US team's lineup were both James Blake and Andy Roddick, both players who had appeared at the Davis cup since 2001. The US lost in the first single match on Friday with Troicki beating Isner, and then Djokovic going on to beat Sam Querrey to move up 2 to 0. The US gained their one point in a Saturday doubles victory. Isner and Bob Bryan won their doubles match against Janko Tipsarevic and Nenad Zimonjic. Serbia now faces a quarterfinal matchup against rival Croatia, who had a clean sweep of 5 to 0 against Ecuador.
Other matches left the Czech Republic victors against Belgium with 4 to 1. They'll go on to play either Israel or Chile. Chile leads right now 2-1 after Israel's doubles win on Sunday. Andy Ram and Jonathan Erlich won the match against Jorge Aguilar and Paul Capderville. This matchup is a day behind because of the delay due to the earthquake, as the match is held in Chile and the Israeli team's arrival had to be delayed.
Switzerland has been eliminated by Spain with 4-1. Spain will play neighboring France in July, after France defeated German also 4-1. Russia eliminated India by 3-2 and will go on to play against Argentina who defeated Sweden also 3-2.
