This week in tennis featured one tournament each for both the men and the women, with both ending approximately a week before the start of the US Open. The men competed in the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters, a Masters 1000 tournament held in Cincinnati, Ohio. The women competed in the Rogers Cup, presented by National Bank. This tournament was held in Montreal, Canada.
The women’s Rogers Cup featured a variety of big names, with plenty of women trying to tune their game up as they gear up toward the US Open. The one seed for the tournament was Jelena Jankovic. Other big names included Kim Clijsters, Yanina Wickmayer, Vera Zvonereva, Melanie Oudin, Marion Bartoli, Agnieszka Radwanska, Sventlana Kuznetsova, Aravane Rezai, Elena Dementieva, Francesca Schiavone, Flavia Pennetta, Dinara Safina, and Caroline Wozniacki.
Jelena Jankovic continued her string of early defeats, losing to Benesova of the Czech Republic in the second round. Marion Bartoli managed to take out Benesova in the third round, losing to Azarenka in the fourth round of the tournament. Wickmayer had an early exit in the second round, losing to Szavay. Zvonereva took out Szavay in the third round. The quarterfinals of the tournament were relatively packed with stars, with Bartoli facing off against Azarenka, Schiavone facing off against Wozniacki, and Clijsters going up against Zvonereva. Kuznetsova faced unranked Zheng in the quarterfinals. Wozniacki and Zvonereva managed to emerge from the fray to make it to the finals. Wozniacki went on to win the tournament with a quick two-set victory, winning 6-3, 6-2.
The men played in the Western & Southern Financial tournament, a tournament that featured a majority of the top-ranked players in the field. Players included Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Marcos Baghdatis, Mardy Fish, Robin Soderling, Nikolay Davydenko, Tomas Berdych, and Andy Roddick.
Nadal managed to make it to the fourth round, beating Taylor Dent and Benneteau of France. Nadal wound up losing to Baghdatis, who beat Cilic, Bellucci, and Berdych. Davydenko made it to the fourth round as well, taking out Ferrer and Ginepri. He was eventually taken out by Federer, who beat Baghdatis to make it to the finals.
Andy Roddick made it to the semi finals, eventually losing to Mardy Fish. Fish took out Verdasco, Murray, and Gasquet, while Roddick took out Soderling and de Bakker, as well as Djokovic. Fish and Federer played the final match, with Federer managing to win in three sets. Federer lost the first set 6-5(7), but came back to take the second set 7-6(1) and the third set 6-4.
