This week in tennis was the final week of Wimbledon warm-ups as players worked to get into form. Both then men and the women were competitive in the lead-up to Wimbledon, with both playing the UNICEF Open and the AEGON International.
The Women’s side of the AEGON open features plenty of big names, and plenty of different upsets. Ranked Players included Caroline Wozniacki, Agnieszka Radwanska, Yarina Wickmayer, Kim Clijsters, Li Na, Francesca Schiavone, and Sam Stosur. Early upsets included Li Na losing to Elena Baltacha through a retirement, and Caroline Wozniacki losing in the first round to Aravane Rezai, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Both Kim Clijsters and Sam Stosur were upset in the final rounds of play, with Clijsters losing to Azarenka and Stosur losing to Makarova. Azarenka and Markova actually made it to the finals, with Ekaterina Makarova winning 7-6(5), 6-4.
The Women’s side of the UNICEF Open had fewer big names, but plenty of upsets. Players included Justine Henin, Ana Ivonovic, and Dinara Safina. Safina was upset in the first round by Rybarikova, losing 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-4. Ivanovic lost in the second round to Andrea Petkovic, 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-1. Justine Henin managed to take her game all the way to the top, taking out Kerber, Vinvi, Barrois, and Dulgheru before taking out Petkovic in the final, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The Men’s AEGON International tournament featured a few big names, including Nicolas Almagro, Feliciano Lopez, Gilles Simon, and James Blake. Many of the other men’s players got in their final Wimbledon tune-ups in last week’s tournaments.
The AEGON had interesting moments, featuring James Ward’s first quarter-final in an ATP Tour event. Gilles Simon also had a few moments in the tournament, losing in the quarter-finals but happy to be back after a near 3 month injury absence. The tournament belonged to Michael Llodra, however, as he took out Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the final, 7-5, 6-2. Llodra is currently ranked 46th in the World.
The Men’s UNICEF Open also featured a few big names among plenty of up-and-coming players. Names to note included Ivan Ljubicic, Marcos Baghdatis, Tommy Robredo, and Janko Tipsarevic. The tournament saw plenty of action, with all four top seeds (Ljubicic, Baghdatis, Robredo, Troicki) all losing in the second round of play. Sergiy Stakhovsky and Janko Tipsarevic met in the final, with Stakhovsky taking home the win, 6-3, 6-0.
