This week in tennis featured the start of Wimbledon, one of the biggest championships of the year. All of the biggest names in Tennis are featured in this year’s Wimbledon, with some expected and predictable rankings. The top 5 seeds in the Men’s Draw are as follows: (1) Roger Federer, (2) Rafael Nadal, (3) Novak Djokovic, (4) Andy Murray, (5) Andy Roddick. The top 5 seeds in the Women’s Draw are as follows: (1) Serena Williams, (2) Venus Williams, (3) Caroline Wozniacki, (4) Jelena Jankovic, (5) Francesca Schiavone.
The top men’s seeds have had a relatively simple draw, but have struggled somewhat in their first few games. Roger Federer nearly lost in the first round, finally winning in the fifth set. Nadal also saw a small hiccup in the first few rounds of the tournament, but managed to pull his game out in the fifth set. The top 4 seeds have all managed to make it to the fourth round. There are some relatively interesting matchups coming in the fourth round: Novak Djokovic will face Lleyton Hewitt, Andy Murray will face Sam Querry, and Robin Soderling will face David Ferrer.
The biggest news of the tournament came in the first round of the Men’s tournament, but failed to include the big names at Wimbledon. John Isner and Nicolas Mahut met in the first round. The two wound up playing in the longest match in the history of the game. The match started on Tuesday night and ended Thursday night, lasting slightly over 11 hours. Isner pulled out the win in the end, taking the match in the 5th set, 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (7), 7-6 (3), 70-68. The 70-68 5th set is the longest 5th set in history, taking over 8 hours to complete.
In women’s news, there were a few ups and downs amongst some expected results. French Open winner Francesca Schiavone lost in the first round to Vera Dushevina of Russia, 7-6 (7), 5-7, 1-6. Kim Clijsters rolled through her first round, winning 6-0, 6-3 against Maria Elena Camerin. The top four seeds have all advanced to the round of 16, making for some interesting fourth round matchups. Serena Williams will face Maria Sharapova (16), while Na Li (9) will face Agnieszka Radwanska (7). Jelena Jankovic will face Vera Zvonareva (21), while Venus Williams will face Jarmila Groth of Australia.
The Williams’ Sisters continued their winning ways, easily making it to the fourth round. The sisters have gained the number 1 ranking and are ranked 1st in the Wimbledon doubles tournament. In men’s doubles, the first ranked team of Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic fell to Chris Eaton and Dominic Inglot of Great Britain in the second round, 5-7, 7-5, 6-7, 7-6, 6-8.The Bryan Brothers, ranked 2nd, cruised to the third round, 6-2, 6-4, 7-6. In mixed doubles, the first ranked team of Nenad Zimonjuic and Samantha Stosur look forward to their second round match after making it through the first round. The American team of Bob Bryan and Lindsay Davenport were bounced from the second round of the tournament.
