Wimbledon Tennis Championships at the All England Tennis Club

The end of Wimbledon was featured this week, highlighting some of the best players in the world. The last week in tennis featured some incredible ups and downs, with plenty of upsets by newcomers looking to make their mark.

The fourth round of the Men’s side saw few surprises, save for the upset of Andy Roddick. The fifth seeded American lost to Yen-Hsun Lu of Taipei in a 5 set match, losing 6-4, 6-7, 6-7, 7-6, 9-7. Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Robin Soderling, Andy Murray, and Rafael Nadal all managed to make it through to the quarterfinals.

The biggest surprise of the tournament came in the quarterfinals, with Roger Federer losing to Tomas Berdych, 4-6, 6-3, 1-6, 4-6. This stunning defeat was the only surprise of the round, with Murray, Djokovic, and Nadal making it through to the semis. Tomas Berdych made it through to the finals, handling Djokovic in straight sets (6-3, 7-6, 6-3). Nadal beat Murray 6-4, 7-6, 6-4 to make it to the final.

In the end, Rafael Nadal came out on top, cruising to a 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 win over Berdych. The win was Nadal’s 8th Slam, helping to secure his world #1 Ranking.

The Women’s quarterfinals featured plenty of upsets and surprises at the expense of Kim Clijsters and Venus Williams. Clijsters, the 8 seed, lost to Vera Zvonereva, the 21 seed. The match went three sets, with Clijsters losing 6-3, 4-6, 2-6. Venus Williams lost to Tsvetana Pironkova in the biggest upset of the tournament, losing quickly in a 2-6, 3-6 heartbreaker. Serena Williams moved on, beating Na Li of China 7-5, 6-3.

Williams went on to face un-seeded Petra Kvitova in the semifinals, easily handling her opponent with a 7-6, 6-2 win. Vera Zvonareva went on to beat her unseeded opponent, Pironkova, winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Serena Williams continued her dominance in the game, beating Zvonereva 6-3, 6-2 for an easy win. This Slam win is her 13th, allowing her to pass Billie Jean King on the all-time Slam winner’s list.

Zvonereva managed to make two finals in this year’s Wimbledon, partnering with Elena Vesnina to face Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova in the Women’s Doubles Finals. Unfortunately, Zvonereva lost again, losing 7-6, 6-2.

The Men’s Doubles also featured two teams that were not expected to be in the finals. Jurgen Melzer of Austria and Philipp Petzschner of Germany beat out Robert Lindstedt of Austria and Horia Tecau of Romania 6-1, 7-5, 7-5.

In Mixed Doubles action, Cara Black and Leander Paes managed to eek out a win from Wesley Moodie and Lisa Raymond. Black and Paes won the tournament with a 6-4, 7-6 win.
