This week in tennis featured multiple tournaments for the men and the Fed Cup for the women. These mark the first tournaments after impressive showings by both Kim Clijsters and Novak Djokovic, the winners of the Australian Open.
For the men the SA Tennis Open was a chance for lesser-known names to shine. The SA Tennis Open is an ATP World Tour 250 event held in Johannesburg, South Africa. Some of the names in the tournament included Feliciano Lopez, Janko Tipsarevic, Yen-Hsun Lu, and Kevin Anderson.
Feliciano Lopez was the first seed in the event, expected to easily make it to the final rounds. Lopez failed to get started during the tournament, however, losing to the impressive Davevic of Canada. Dancevic beat out Lopez 6-7 (6), 6-2, 7-6(8) to make it through to the second round.
Lopez was not the only major seed in the tournament to go down. The second-seeded Lu fell to Raonic of Canada, losing 3-6,3-6. The third seed, Janko Tipsarevic, lost to Jesse Huta Galung of the Netherlands in the first round as well, losing 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-7 (4).
The fourth seed, South African Native Kevin Anderson, lived up to his billing and took advantage of the falling top seeds. Anderson went on to the finals, where he meat Somdev Devvarman of India. Anderson needed three sets but managed to take the tournament 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The PBZ Zagreb Indoors was another World Tour 250 event held in Zagreb, Croatia. This tournament featured plenty of well known names, including Marin Cilic, Richard Gasquet, Florian Mayer, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, and Ivan Ljubicic.
The Top Two Seeds of Cilic and Ljubicic both fell in the third round. Cilic lost to Mayer 3-6, 4-6, and Ljubicic lost to Dodig of Croatia 4-6, 4-6. Gasquet lost in the third round as well, retiring after losing in the first set , 2-5. Gasquet lost to Berrer, who would eventually beat out Mayer to make it to the finals. He would face Dodig, who marched his way through after beating Ljubicic and beating Garcia-Lopez. Dodig went on to capture the tournament, winning 6-3, 6-4 over Berrer.
The final tournament for the men this week was the Movistar Open, yet another World Tour 250 tournament held in Santiago, Chile. Some names in this tournament included David Nalbandian, Juan Monaco, Juan Ignacio Chela, Tommy Robredo, and Tomaz Bellucci.
The top-seeded Nalbandian lost in the second round, taken out by Zeballos of Argentina, 6-2, 7-5. Juan Monaco, the second seed, lost to Gonzalez of Argentina in the first round, who won 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. The finals brought together Giraldo of Colombia and Robredo. Tommy Robredo wound up winning the tournament, needed three sets to win 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (5).
In Women’s Fed Cup World Group News, the United States lost to Belgium 4-1. Belgium will go on to face the Czech Republic, who beat out the Slovak Republic 3-2. Russia beat out France, 3-2 to go on to face Italy, who beat Australia 4-1. The next stage of the world group will be held the 16th and 17th of April.
